Jeff Tetzlaff (3)

Jeff brings a wealth of knowledge, having spent the last 30+ years working within the energy production, water and wastewater treatment and manufacturing industries. His experience working with 3D capture and measurement technologies perfectly aligns with APEM’s growing list of geospatial and environmental consultancy services.

Jeff said:

APEM Group operates at the confluence of digital technology and ecological expertise and we are very different to the bulk of aerial mapping companies which are focused on data collection/processing only. We deliver customer value beyond data acquisition by creating a sustainable repository used to collaborate well beyond project commissioning. In addition, this is an exciting time for ‘Action’ as the US offshore wind market moves into construction phase after years of scientific and public development. This is a great time to be joining the APEM Group!

APEM Group’s industry-leading digital aerial surveying technology has proven perfect for our clients in the US, where accurate, reliable results are the key to long-term success. Some of our projects over the past nine years include ultra-high-resolution digital aerial surveys of salmon habitat for Idaho Fish and Game, annual surveying wetland restoration projects in the Florida Everglades, multiple topographic surveys, and shade mapping for solar sites across the US, and ornithology colony surveys in Hawaii.

APEM Group believe that the future of remote sensing and geospatial solutions is very much a multi-platform approach, whether it’s near-infra-red, thermal, ROV, LiDAR, or echosounders and GNSS positioning equipment.

The highly skilled team at APEM Group which consists of highly talented data analysts, combined with the latest equipment, provide the right solution for a wide range of industries, delivering ultra-high-resolution imagery, independent environmental consultancy, and expert advice.

One such industry is renewable energy. Offshore wind is thriving in the US, thanks to President Biden’s investment and support. Surveys are a necessary part of the industry, from project planning and permitting, ongoing compliance with legislation, through to construction and monitoring. While the permitting regime can seem long and arduous, accurate surveys that give measurable results reduce permitting risk, easing the pressures of time and costs for clients and their investors.

From 2016 to 2019, APEM Group delivered the world’s largest offshore wildlife aerial survey, spanning the whole of the New York Offshore Planning Area (16,740 square miles). The three-year program of quarterly surveys of birds and marine wildlife was crucial to understanding seasonal wildlife distribution, abundance and movement, was delivered in collaboration with Normandeau Associates, and has enabled the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) to identify potential wind energy areas. A similar program of regional state-of-the-art surveys has also been carried out by the team on behalf of BOEM of the coast of the Carolinas.

Jeff believes that environmental compliance and risk are a top-four priority in any company in America. It’s vital that we don’t just concentrate on helping with green energy production, but also help businesses make the most of the energy already generated. Infrared thermal surveys of the land identify pipe leaks and the loss of heat in buildings and factories, helping businesses to save money by repairing and insulating. Thermal mapping of towns and cities can be rapidly completed and give a permanent record which can be revisited to identify any changes.

Landscape and topographic surveys are vital for assessment and ongoing monitoring and we’re constantly finding ways to improve and re-purpose our industry-leading geospatial technology. APEM Group’s H2OVER® and COVER+® tools were first developed for the Environmental sector in the UK but has proven to be an invaluable tool for clients whose land is wide-ranging or difficult to access. In a single flight, we can survey a whole region covering literally every square inch at the highest possible resolution. The detail that is captured has to be seen to be believed and is available at the click of a mouse.

Our ultra-high resolution aerial imagery produces photo-realistic, fully interactive 3D models of the landscape, giving a complete picture of an area. APEM Group’s specialist vertical and oblique camera systems and innovative software generate highly detailed and accurate models, perfect for stakeholder engagement in the construction, utilities, and regulatory service industries.

Jeff believes this capability can add significant value to the US market:

“Large scale uses for 2D-3D combination solutions (within environmental management) is behind the application curve, unlike traditional civil constructors, designers, builders, manufacturers. Most uses for 3D in the US are based on the design-build functionality, however, environmental dynamics beg for “Operations-Maintenance” that can return value over the long-term.”

Dr. Stuart Clough, President of APEM Inc, said:

On a personal level, I am looking forward to working closely with Jeff to deliver APEM’s global best practice surveys to the US market.

Jeff focuses on delivering value through problem solving: a mindset which is valued at all levels in the APEM team. Our niche technical teams work together to collect data of the highest quality, followed by analysis and production of results. There is an art to ensuring that the right information and data is captured; moreover, we believe that data can be revisited and repurposed.

We’re looking forward to an exciting period of growth in the US, with added geospatial services and projects for 2022 and beyond.

We’re thrilled to have Jeff join the team at APEM Inc. Connect with us to keep up to date with happenings in the US and worldwide.
