Identifying thermal plumes

Thermal plumes and effluent leaks can have a huge impact on protected or sensitive ecosystems, as well as having financial implications for organizations the longer they go on. APEM Inc’s aerial surveys are quick and cost-effective, as they allow coverage of large, remote and inaccessible locations. We will undertake surveys at a range of resolutions, giving our analysts a powerful tool for analysis and ongoing monitoring.

Aerial surveys provide a unique point of visibility and unrivaled data, enabling our technicians to provide expert analysis and evidence of thermal plumes.

There is a range of applications for industries in both coastal and inland waters, including:

  • Leak detection from long sea outfalls
  • Assessing the influence of groundwater upwelling on river flows
  • Monitoring thermal industrial effluent
  • Monitoring oil spills

With the very latest thermographic technology and our knowledge of water quality, fluvial (river) and coastal processes, we offer bespoke solutions to our clients in the infrastructure, energy and utilities industries.

We use a combination of thermal infrared and color optical imagery to detect, evaluate and validate thermal plumes and pipeline breaches. Our results provide our clients with a clear demonstration of how and where thermal effluent discharges into the local environment. The high resolution, full color images show the interface between the thermal plume and the surrounding environment and can be used for ongoing monitoring.

By planning and executing a series of surveys, we monitor the changes in time and location of thermal plumes. For instance, a large-scale thermal or pollutant plume may change and develop with changes in temperature, tide or discharge regimes.

A multi survey approach can be used to assess outfall pipes and identify leaks and breaches along pipelines. The extent of the plume and any associated mixing zone can be assessed and monitored.

It is vital for our clients to have a plan to manage discharges and lessen their impact on the surrounding environment, as well as managing breaches and pipeline leaks. By undertaking surveys, we can report changes in patterns and discharges, and our clients can report back to the regulators.
