Benefits of aerial surveys for land use mapping

Land is our clients’ most valuable business asset. Aerial surveys produce highly accurate data, and are repeatable, enabling our clients to monitor changes over time. Aerial surveys map the land with minimal disturbance to people or animals, unlike traditional surveying methods, and allow 100 per cent coverage, even in remote or inaccessible locations.

Using aerial surveys to map land use

With a multi-tier, rule-based approach to habitat mapping, we consider the tone, texture and context of the imagery.

Whether it is commissioned, bespoke data, readily available satellite data or a combination of the two, we use the characteristics of the earth’s surface to extract a thematic representation of the land surface. The process is semi-automated, helping clients to make informed decisions in a timely and cost-effective way.

In addition to detailed land cover maps, APEM Inc can also generate accurate ortho mosaics, topographic maps, photo-realistic 3D models and 360-degree virtual flyovers of the study area.

The COVER+® tool from APEM Inc measures the natural capital and ecosystem goods and services of an area, presenting measurable and quantifiable results. COVER+® shows not only the benefits of the land, but also its value and its possibilities for use.

Using contemporary data, satellite imagery and expert analysis, COVER+® provides the most detailed natural capital account and assessment possible. With the results from this data, we identify hotspots and deficits of natural capital and provide impartial, evidence-based advice on how to make the most of the land.

Spatial representation lets us integrate the results into other decision-making tools, as well as facilitating stakeholder engagement. Alongside our remote sensing and terrestrial and aquatic ecology expertise, COVER+® can help set biodiversity baselines, as well as working to identify the most appropriate mitigation for any development.
